20130426 Sharyland-FCCLA-STATE-PARTICIPANTSSharyland High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders Of America (FCCLA) members won high honors at their recent Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) event competition for the entire state of Texas. The FCCLA State Conference in Dallas, held on April 10 to 13.

Teams that competed and placed wereMyriam Garza, Maria E. Garza, Natalia Gonzales, Oscar Gonzalez, Damian Lee, Adolfo Lopez, Monica Sarmiento, and Marianna Acosta placed fifth in parliamentary procedure, fifth place. Advisor for this event was Mary Jo Brisnahan. Sofie Arjona, Camila Da'Conceicao and Laila Kalaf placed fourth in chapter showcase manual. Advisor for this event wasMary Jane Laing.

Members also took the Leadership Enhancement Opportunity (LEO) proficiency exams and earned outstanding recognitions. Gold medalists were Andrea Perez, Jackie Luke, Melissa Silva, Edeliz Perez, Evelyn Cantu, Hunter Belvail, Laila Kalaf, Sofie Arjona, Camila Da'Conceicao, Monica Sarmiento, Natalia Gonzalez, Adolfo Lopez, Myriam Garza, Oscar Gonzalez. Silver medalists were Marianna Acosta, Damian Lee, Maria E. Garza

Alexis Montemayor wasselected as State Officer Vice-President of Competitive Events for the 2013-2014 school year. Carlos Cruz, National Officer Candidate, was awarded the “Best of Texas" FCS Program Area Student Scholarship.

The Sharyland FCCLA Chapter was awarded The Outstanding Gold Chapter Award, only seven are awarded in state. The chapter also received recognition for outstanding accomplishments and contributions. SHS Advisor Mary Jane Laing was recognized as the Region V Outstanding Advisor.

Sharyland High School FCCLA earned the “News across Texas” award for the seventh consecutive year. Texas FCCLA recognized the top chapter that submitted the most articles to national and State FCCLA headquarters. Accepting the award was VP of Public Relations Myriam Garza. Advisor for public relations is Mary Jane Laing.

Monica Sarmiento participated in the FCCLA’s got talent competition in the first general session, where she performed a dance routine against the top eight talents of the State of Texas.

Sharyland FCCLA advisors who attended were Mary Jo Brisnahan, Mary Jane Laing, Norma Meza, and Hilda Rodriguez. Judging a STAR event was Bernice Savedra, previous member of SHS FCCLA.
