20180516 SISDBoardThe Sharyland School Board of Trustees has a new president after the board reorganized their officers following the May 5 school board election.

At a special called meeting Wednesday, school board trustees Melissa Smith and Jose “Pepe” Garcia were promoted as board president and vice president, respectively.

Smith ran unopposed in the May 5 election while Garcia beat his opponent, Oton “Tony” Guerrero, with nearly 66 percent of the vote. Julio Cerda served as the board president in the current school year while Smith served as its vice president.

The board also named Trustee Keith Padilla as its board secretary and Noel Garza as its assistant secretary.

“I’m extremely honored to do the job and serve the district in this capacity,” Smith said oh her board presidency Thursday morning. “It’s something I’ve been looking forward to doing for quite some time to continue the excellence of the district and work with our new superintendent,”

Trustee Ricky Longoria reflected on the actions of the board in the last school year, which included hiring a new superintendent last month after current district Superintendent Robert O’Connor announced last December he was retiring.

“We have a lot of unity on this board and we stand by and support each other,” Longoria said. “We’ve had a fantastic year led by a great superintendent and we look forward to working with our new superintendent.

Maria “Mimi” Vidaurri, a superintendent at Robstown ISD, was hired by Sharyland trustees to serve as the district’s new superintendent. She was at the special meeting sitting next to O’Connor to shadow him.

Wednesday’s meeting was one of his last meetings as the district superintendent.

“I get a lot of the accolades for the success of the district, but I always deflect it. I am just one piece of the puzzle,” O’Connor said of the board. “I couldn’t do what I’ve done in the last few years without a solid school board, and I am glad Dr. Vidaurri will have the opportunity to work with you guys.”
