20191113 PioneerSigningA Sharyland Pioneer Diamondback will become a University of Houston Cougar after signing a letter of intent to play baseball for the university.

Evan Maldonado became the first athlete of the school year at Sharyland Pioneer High School to sign a letter of intent a Wednesday ceremony attended by his family, coaches and classmates.

“I’ve always had my eyes set on going there,” Maldonado explained, adding that he planned to study business.

As a baseball player, Maldonado has a career batting average of .388, hit 66 runs with an RBI of 66, 32 extra base hits and an ERA of 2.55and was once named the 5A Hitter of the Week at

“I’ve known him a long time and been friends with his family, it’s been nice to see him grow up into the young man and young athlete he is today,” Sharyland Pioneer Athletic Coordinator Thomas Lee said. “He’s put a lot of time to his baseball career, that’s evident with this signing. Evan is one of those kids who are very dedicated, driven and self-motivated. To be successful at the highest level, you have to have those characteristics.”
