20191120 SHSSigningWhen she signed on to participate in women’s cross country and track and field team for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, Andrea Gallardo made history.

Gallardo signed that letter Wednesday as a Lady Rattler with Sharyland High School, but is a student at Sharyland Advanced Academy. She became the first student from SA3 to sign a national letter of intent and will represent both schools at the collegiate level.

“It’s been difficult combining sports with high school and earning my associate’s degree, but I feel like it’s prepared me for the next four years,” Gallardo said. “My coaches have prepared me for this by working with me these four years to do my best every day and treat my races like it’s my last one. It helps me to perform at the collegiate level and it’s an honor to represent both of my schools under this umbrella; I’m making history.”

Gallardo will participate in women’s track and field and cross country for UTRGV, an NCAA Div. 1 university. The Lady Vaqueros compete in the Western Athletic Conference and recently finished 6th at the WAC conference held earlier this month.

Gallardo is a four-year letter winner in both cross country and track. She is a four-time all-district honoree, a two-time All-Valley honoree and a two-time all-region honoree. In addition she is a four-time regional qualifier in cross country and is a two-time state qualifier. In track, Gallardo is a three-time area qualifier and three time regional qualifier.

“We look forward to seeing and hearing about her future success with the Lady Rattlers this spring and with the Lady Vaqueros for the next four years,” Sharyland High School athletic Coordinator Ron Adame said.

Melissa Dearth, women’s cross country and track coach, said she expects great things from Gallardo at UTRGV.
“Andrea has been one of those girls you root for,” Dearth said. “She always works hard and never complains. I can count on one hand the amount of times she’s missed a practice these last four years. She is dedicated and it’s been a joy working with her. She always gives it 110 percent and is a consistent and valuable player.”

Gallardo will study kinesiology at UTRGV and as an SA3 student, will earn an associate’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in May, SA3 Principal Ivan Karr said. Gallardo is the personification of the mission of SA3, Karr said at the signing.

“We encourage students to be well rounded and pursue academic endeavors to excel in the class and outside of it,” Karr said. “She works hard and makes sacrifices, she is a definite example of going above and beyond in the classroom.”
