Rattlers stay perfect, roll to District 30-5A title

Progress Times photo by Luciano GuerraEDINBURG – Sharyland racked up 62 first-half points to defeat Edinburg Vela 69-0 in the Week 10 season finale to claim the District 30-5A championship outright. The win set up a bi-district playoff rematch against Laredo United.

The Rattlers (10-0 overall, 8-0 district) won their eighth straight district game, and 10th overall, with the victory over the Sabercats (0-10, 0-8) to stay undefeated en route to the district title, their third in four years, and accomplished two of the goals they set for this season.

Lady Rattlers lose two starters, fall to Smithson Valley in regionals

Progress Times photo by Doug YoungEDINBURG – Two key injuries and a late reaction to a 2-0 deficit ended the Lady Rattlers’ playoff run in the Region IV-5A volleyball tournament semifinals at The University of Texas-Pan American Field House last weekend at the hands of Smithson Valley.

Senior starters Kiki Honrubia and Yamyo Monie suffered injuries in the second and fourth sets, respectively, that stalled Sharyland’s come-from-behind rally and allowed the Rangers to advance to the regional after a 25-12, 25-12, 15-25, 25-18 victory over the Lady Rattlers.

Progress Times photo by Doug YoungMISSION – Sharyland passed their last big test of the regular season with a 48-7 Week 9 rout of Edinburg North, and is on the verge of achieving two more goals when they face Edinburg Vela on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Cats Stadium in the season finale.

The Rattlers improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in District 30-5A with the victory over the Cougars, and will look to finish the season undefeated and lift the district crown outright with a win over the first-year Sabercats (0-9, 0-7).
