Sharyland sweeps district meet; area next

DONNA – With an overwhelming showing at last weekend’s District 30-5A track meet at Donna’s Bennie La Prade Stadium, where the Rattlers and Lady Rattlers won the boys and girls titles, Sharyland is set to participate in the newly created area phase of the track season that starts Friday and concludes Saturday at Bobby Lackey Stadium in Weslaco.

“The kids performed pretty well. The boys and girls varsity and JV teams all won. It was a clean sweep,” said Sharyland boys track and field head coach Tom Lee. “We had some real good things happen this week. We qualified 21 kids to the area meet on Saturday. We hope to qualify that many to the regional meet in two weeks. We’ve got our work cut out for us this Saturday because the Laredo schools are going to bring down some quality burners and we’re going to have to be at our best this week.”

The Rattlers racked up 246.5 points en route to the 30-5A district meet title on April 13, and the squad even set a few records along the way. La Joya Palmview was the runner up with 111 points.

Lopez ends Rattlers state championship reign

20130405-Sharyland-v-Lopez-Playoff-Boys-Soccer dy-052MERCEDES – Brownsville López got even with Sharyland for last year’s IV-5A regional final loss and put an end to the Rattlers’ reign as 5A state champions with a 1-0 area playoff victory on April 5 at Tiger Stadium in Mercedes.

The victory advanced Lopez to the regional quarterfinals against Brownsville Rivera, where their season came to a close with a 2-0 loss to the Raiders on Tuesday. For Sharyland, last Friday’s loss sent the Rattlers home early after winning the state title in 2012 and a District 30-5A runner up finish this season.

“They went for it, scored one, and they defended well,” said Sharyland head coach Reveriano Hernández. “We couldn’t get it in. We had opportunities to score, we had several. If you don’t score, you don’t win. It was a close game.”

Los Fresnos OT goal eliminates Lady Rattlers in regional quarterfinals

WESLACO – The Lady Rattlers’ hopes of returning to the IV-5A regional tournament in San Antonio was dashed Tuesday by Ariana Castillo’s overtime goal to lead Los Fresnos over Sharyland 1-0 at Bobby Lackey Stadium in the regional quarterfinals.

While the Lady Falcons stayed on the field to celebrate with fans and family members, the Lady Rattlers quietly and quickly gathered their equipment after shaking hands with the winning squad and exited the stadium to board the Sharyland ISD school bus for the trip back home.
